Gardening with Kids
Children of all ages can enjoy gardening. From a two year old placing bean seeds in a hole or cup to older children that are able to plan a garden, cultivate and even harvest. Even if you are not a gardener, as a family you can learn together.
Some Very helpful guidelines for Mom's and Dad's:
- Plan ahead. Read your seed packets carefully. Plan where and how large the garden is going to be. Make sure their garden has at least six hours of full sun for best results. You may have to give up a prime garden plot of your own, but you'll find the rewards in the long run outweigh the inconvenience. If space is at a premium, try container gardening.
- Children want to see results. Choose quick sprouting seeds such as marigolds, sunflowers, beans, peas, etc. If you have a lot of space, watching a huge pumpkin grow or zucchini plant grow is fun and incredible.
- Children like to have fun, so keep a light approach. Try to spend short, frequent periods in the garden, remembering that children become bored easily.
- Keep safety in mind. Teach the children to properly store their tools - hoes can be very painful when stepped on. Make sure the children do not try to taste any parts of the plant without your OK. Keep all chemicals out of reach.
- Give guidance when asked, but try to let your child make the decisions on how their garden should grow. Expect high enthusiasm at the start, but realize like many of us, interest will wane towards the end of the season.
- Expect some failures. These may be due to the weather, insects, over or under watering or any number of things. Discuss success and failures with your children. They can develop their problem solving skills by finding out what went wrong and what can be done differently next year.
- Try to get your child proper tools. A child can be easily frustrated by a flimsy, plastic hoe that breaks in two or adult tools that are too difficult to handle.
-
Have fun! Children are naturally excited about growing things. Share this excitement with them. Look at something wondrous and wonder about it together.
-
Praise your children as they succeed or if things don't go right the first time around in the garden. It will amaze you at the expression and sense of Pride as they're helped to overcome small obstacles that help them to achieve wonderful vegetables.
